Legal fireworks bad for St. John

By Trudy Bounds / L’Observateur / July 1, 1998

DEAR EDITOR: To all whom it should have concerned more: St. John Parish seemed (past tense) to be a notch ahead of some of theother parishes in its responsible thinking of their people’s safety, lives, property and peace. If the legalization of the sale and use of fireworks hadbeen passed by the voters of this parish, I would feel that the majority rules and it would make it somewhat easier to accept.

I recall many, many times reading the results of personal and property damage, as a result of fireworks, and I’ve had my own personal experience when adults were intentionally shooting bottle rockets horizontally toward my home and, as a result, my window broke with me in the inside right where it broke. If I had been on the outside, I’m sure my eyes wouldhave been shot out. I was lucky, but I think disturbance of the peace isstill illegal? Bravo for Mr. Dale Wolfe and Mr. Clinton Perrilloux for voting against thelegalization of fireworks. They acted as thinking, responsible, caring andunselfish, mature councilmen. What a shame for the people of this parishthat the rest refused to listen to their advice! I am now more convinced that age has nothing to do with maturity.
