Lutcher’s Benn Leads All-District 10-3A Team

LUTCHER – Most valuable player April Benn led a group of 10 Lady Bulldogs named to the All-District 10-3A softball team announced recently.
Benn, Erin Hymel, Candace Millet, Brandy Neal and Christie Melancon were named to the district first team. Mitzi Hebert, Katie Cashio, Kim St. Pierreand Jenee Weber were selected to the second team and Becky Lambert was named honorable mention.
John Bentivegna was named coach of the year after leading the Lady Bulldogs to the district championship and state title with a 24-3 record.
Benn, a senior catcher, batted a team high .520 with five home runs, ninedoubles and 38 runs batted in. Benn also hit in the clutch, going 10-for-11in the state tournament.
Hymel, a junior pitcher, was the ace of the Lady Bulldog staff. Hymel went22-2 in 1998 with seven no hitters and 15 shutouts. She had an earned runaverage of .40 and had 158 strikeouts in 147 innings.Neal, a senior shortstop, was named as the district’s utility player after batting .464 with four home runs, eight stolen bases and 31 RBIs. Millet was named as the all-district first baseman and Christie Melancon as its designated hitter as juniors.
Hebert, a senior, and Cashio, a junior, were named the second team’s second baseman and third baseman, respectively. St. Pierre, a senior, andWeber, a junior, were named to the second team outfield.
Becky Lambert was selected to the honorable mention team as a junior outfielder.
E.D. White placed seven members on the first team – pitcher CaseyPrejean, catcher Amy Pitre, second baseman Aimee Gravois, third baseman Allison Didier, shortstop Alaina Cavell and outfielders Heidi Becnel and Abby Rodrigue. Meredith Hongis and Amy Thibodaux were selected to thehonorable mention team.
Outfielders Nicole Georgetown and Daven Jenkins of Plaquemine filled out the first team. Plaquemine also placed pitcher Cassie Alleman, catcherBritni LeBlanc, first baseman Chasity Berthelot and shortstop Tiffany Berthelot on the second team and Laura Friloux on the honorable mention squad.
Also named honorable mention were Donaldsonville’s Alisha Collins, Letedra Collins, Kiesha Lymon, Ellyn Smith and Natalie Smith.
