St. Charles Catholic High School Announces 2023 Graduates

St. Charles Catholic High School is proud to announce the valedictorians and salutatorians of the 2023 graduating class.

St. Charles Catholic High School is also pleased to announce that this senior class received over $7 million dollars in scholarships in addition and above the TOPS awards program. 

St. Charles Catholic High School is proud to present additional information about the valedictorians and salutatorians of the 2023 graduating class.

Erin Elizabeth Powell, the daughter of Connie and the late Glennon “Silky” Powell, finished with a GPA of 4.85. She plans to attend Louisiana Tech University to pursue a degree in Psychology with the intention of becoming a clinical psychologist. In her senior year, Erin served as Student Body President, Beta Club Vice President, National Honor Society Secretary, Stagehands Treasurer, and Academic Games Team Captain. She was also an active member in Varsity Cheer, Retreat Team, Eucharistic Ministry, Ambassadors, and Mu Alpha Theta. She is a member of the ACT 30 Plus Club, and she was chosen as the SCC Senior Student of the Year. She also participated in both the district and state literary rallies for Civics.

Erin received the TOPS Honors Scholarship in addition to other scholarships and awards totaling $ 1,891,964. She is a recipient of the Knights of Columbus Catholic Youth Leadership Award, the Louisiana Federal Credit Union Ronald E. Thomas Scholarship, the Academic Games League of America Outstanding Senior Award, and the SCC Gold Service Award.

When asked about her time at SCC, Erin said, “The last five years at SCC have taught me to enjoy every little moment and victory, especially in moments of darkness. The Class of 2023 is small but mighty, and I am beyond blessed to have been able to be a small part in leaving behind a legacy of excellence and of resilience.”

Matthew Paul Schexnayder, the son of Kerry and Alison Schexnayder, finished with a GPA of 4.85. He plans to attend Louisiana State University to pursue a degree in Biochemistry on the Pre-Med track. In his senior year, Matthew served as Mu Alpha Theta President, National Honor Society Vice President, and Student Council Representative. Throughout his time at SCC, Matthew was also an active member of the Beta Club, French Club, Ambassadors, Retreat Team, Eucharistic Ministry, Soccer Team, Swim Team, and Football Team. He is also a member of the ACT 30 Plus Club. Matthew was named to the 2022-2023 LHSAA Academic All-State Composite Team for Football, Soccer, and Swim. He was also named First Team All-District for Soccer and All-State for Swim. Matthew represented SCC at the district literary rally for Advanced Math and Physical Science and also represented SCC at the state literary rally for Physics.

 Matthew received the TOPS Honors Scholarship in addition to other scholarships and stipends totaling $ 1,888,874. He is a recipient of the Marathon Petroleum Scholars Program Award and the SCC Gold Service Award.

 When asked about his time at SCC, Matthew said, “SCC has prepared me very well over the last five years. I feel that the close-knit student body along with the teachers and coaches have created a strong environment filled with good memories and bonds. I am thankful for all that SCC has given me, and I am incredibly excited to start this new chapter of my life.”

Sarah Elizabeth Lang, the daughter of Herb Lang and Dr. Eurydice M. Lang, finished with a GPA of 4.72. She plans to attend Southeastern Louisiana University to pursue a degree in Nursing, and after receiving her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue a doctorate in Nursing. While at St. Charles Catholic, Sarah was a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Ambassadors, and Retreat Team. She was also a member of the Homecoming Court during her sophomore and senior years, a representative of SCC at the District Literary Rally for Spanish, and a two-year varsity soccer player. 

Sarah received the TOPS Honors Scholarship in addition to other monetary awards, totaling $65,652, and she is attending Southeastern Louisiana University on a full scholarship.

When asked about her years at St. Charles Catholic High School, Sarah expressed, “I will always cherish my time at SCC. The relationships I’ve formed over the last 5 years allowed me to grow academically, emotionally and spiritually. My teachers consistently challenged me to achieve my fullest potential yet were always there to nurture and guide through the inevitable temporary difficulties. They taught me to embrace change and instilled in me the necessity to adopt a mindset of life-long learning. My teammates and fellow Comets always inspired and supported me by exemplifying the true meaning of community, reflecting the SCC spirit of flying high and shining bright.”

We are also proud to announce that this senior class received over $7 million dollars in scholarships other than those from the TOPS program.
