SJSO keeps it reel with Kids Fishing Camp

LAPLACE—St. John Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre and several officers spent the Saturday morning of April 22, 2023 with more than 150 children, hookin’ and reelin’ more than 110 fish at St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office’s kids fishing camp in the Bonnet Carre Spillway near Norco.

Marathon Petroleum’s Garyville facility and Denka were corporate sponsors.

Reinhart Performance Food Services donated hamburgers, hot dogs and snacks.

Other camp contributors were St. John Parish Government, St. Charles Recreation Department, Gold Rod Fishing Club, Army Corps of Engineers, St. John Parish School System, Cabelas, Armstrong’s Crickets, La. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Upsilon Mu Zeta Chapter/The Doves of Peace, Denka, Oprah Beauty Supply, Cutters Town Barbershop, Nasser Azzar, Cypress Therapy, CN Railroad, Ingram Barge, First American Bank, Chung’s Heavenly Treats, Bot’s Catering, Paradise Louisiana, Down South Fishing Adventures, LSU Ag Center, Five Star Vending and Preston’s Tax Service.

With pole and bait in hand, Sheriff Tregre and the officers led children in the fishing excursion held around the spillway’s boat launch. Officers helped children place worms and crickets on a hook, cast poles and offer other fishing tips.

Biggest Fish winners were: Harry Hulin, first, 2.75 pounds; Mia Cicet, second, 2.60 pounds; and Jayce Plaia, 1.68 pounds, third.

Most Fish winners were: Nicholas Bazile, first; Kydric Wysingleton, second; and Noriah Esko, third.

First Fish Catch of the Day: Clayton Montz and Sophia Salmeron.

Deputy Bernell Charles spearheaded the camp. Fishing poles and bait were provided.

Sheriff Tregre said the camp was a great outreach event, and a fun time was had by all.
