Defining success in life

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

To the many soon to be high school graduates, may I express my congratulations and best wishes for a healthy, happy and successful future.  Many of you will enter the workforce immediately and some of you will enter college to further your education.

Regardless of the path you take, I’m sure that your ultimate goal is success in life.  Success means different things to different people.  To many people, the only way to measure success is by what we accumulate materially – how much money we have.

In 1923, nine of the world’s most successful financiers met at Chicago’s  Edgewater Beach Hotel.  Financially, they literally thought they controlled the world.  Anything that money could buy was within their grasp – they were rich – rich – rich.  I’m sure many people envied them.  However, in 1948, only 25 years later, this is what happened.

One was bankrupt and lived the last five years of his life on borrowed money.  Another died penniless in a foreign land, a fugitive from justice.  One was insane- another had just been released from Sing Sing prison.  One was broke and died in another country and another was pardoned from prison so he could die at home – broke.  Three committed suicide.

I’m not saying money is evil, but the love of money is evil.

To be successful, a person must have four great loves in his or her life:

  1. Love of God
  2. Love of Family
  3. Love of Country
  4. Love of Work

Many books are written on how to succeed in life.  The one book that will give you a blueprint for life is the Holy Bible.  Within the Bible you will find the answers to all of life’s opportunities and problems.  It contains all the principles found in any other book ever written about success and happiness.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “The Bible is no mere book, but a living creature with power that conquers all who oppose it.”

Congratulations, again, and have a nice day!  In fact, have a nice life!
