EDGARD — Seniors Kharma Creecy and Kailee Edwards have been key leaders this season as West St. John’s softball team looks to rebuild to its former glory.

Now awaiting Thursday’s playoff bracket announcements, the Lady Rams closed out the regular season with back-to-back 19-9 wins against White Castle and Crescent City for an overall 4-3-1 record. Several of the games this year were cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, creating a tight schedule and limited time to catch younger players up to speed on the fundamentals of the game.

Coach Kenneth Streeter said the team has managed to get by with one-on-one training, and he plans to work with the girls on all phases of the game this summer.

“The people we have are coming into high school with very limited knowledge of the game. We are a small school, and these kids are playing three or four sports,” Streeter said. “Sometimes we are in the valley and sometimes we are on top of the hill. We have to find a way to have more consistency. That will come as the girls have more experience.”

According to Streeter, the best performance of the season was last week’s Senior Day game against Varnado. The Lady Rams did an exceptional job pitching and running bases, and the seniors had a chance to shine when they each slammed home runs.

“We had dug ourselves into a hole, but the two seniors pulled the team through that. That’s what set the tone for us, and it showed mental fortitude on their part,” Streeter said.

Streeter described third baseman Edwards as the more vocal leader, while Creecy leads by example rather than with words at catcher and shortstop.

Next season, Streeter will look to Kori Williams to fill the big shoes that Creecy is leaving behind at catcher. He’s also expecting big things from Taryn Russell, MacKenzie Richards and Aakilah Bailey.
