UPDATE:

The Laplace Lions Club golf tournament scheduled for Friday has been washed out, but the St.. Patrick’s Day celebration that same evening is still going on. The Lions will be celebrating all things Irish at Riverlands Country Club on Friday evening and everybody’s invited to join the fun from 6:00 to 9:00. There will be a band, dancing, food and drinks, plus drawings for a number of big-ticket prizes, Admission is $20. Wearing of the Green is encouraged.

Like the rain-delayed golf tournament, all of the revenue will go toward sending physically and mentally challenged children to the Lions Camp near Alexandria this summer.

The golf tournament has been moved to May 5.

There will be a lot of green on the Riverlands Country Club’s golf course March 17 – and it won’t all be on the grass. The Laplace Lions Club is holding its annual golf tournament on St. Patrick’s day, so players, workers and Lions volunteers will all be sporting green as they enjoy the day.

The Lions Club committee overseeing the planning met recently at The Cajun House to review efforts to coordinate the event. Chairwoman Melynie Wright says there will be gifts for all players, and Lions Club President Steven Flynn says a St. Patty’s Day party is planned to follow the tournament itself.  The party will be open to everyone – there’s no admission fee.

The Lions hold the annual event to raise funds for positive purposes including the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation, established in 1974 to provide vision and hearing care to those in need throughout Louisiana. Partnerships with the LSU Health and Science Center and eye doctors in Laplace and throughout the state have allowed the Lions to provide the “Gift of Sight” to over 75,000 Louisiana residents and to help support ongoing research and development in the vision and hearing industry throughout these years.

This year the Laplace Lions’ support will go mostly to helping the Lions Camp, outside Alexandria, for children with physical and mental disabilities. One camper, 19 year old East St. John High School senior Trinity Jacobs of Laplace, has been to the Lions Camp  three times. This year she’ll help start the tournament as the honorary Course Marshall

The club supports several other Laplace area causes like Cubsight vision screenings for preschoolers, swimming lessons for children, horseback riding for people with physical handicaps, and special service awards for high school and college students, with checks to help cover school expenses.
