NEW ORLEANS — Representing Southern University, Vacherie native Jason Dumas will be among the best NFL draft-eligible athletes showcased during the second HBCU Legacy Bowl.

Presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, the post-season all-star game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, February 25 at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans. The Legacy Bowl features players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and will be broadcast live on NFL Network. Surrounding the game will be a week-long celebration of Black culture and history.

Jason Dumas is the son of Melvin and Betty Dumas and a former football standout at St. James High School in Vacherie, where he was named the 2017 River Parish Defensive Player of the Year.

He joined the Prairie View A&M University football team as a freshman in 2018, played in a total of 10 games, and contributed 18 unassisted and 11 assisted tackles.

Dumas played at Prairie View during the 2019 and 2020-21 seasons, recording a season high of nine tackles and 1.5 sacks against Grambling State in March 2021 and becoming an All-SWAC performer.

A journey through the transfer portal brought Dumas to a rival Southwestern Athletic College team. In May 2022, Dumas announced that he would be reuniting with former Prairie View Coach Eric Dooley on the Southern University football team.

“Ultimately my goal is to continue the change of how HBCU football is viewed,” Dumas said when announcing his decision to transfer. “I am an HBCU product, and I will continue to be a HBCU product. With that being said; I’m coming home to the state of Louisiana to attend Southern University for my last season.”

Dumas recorded 18 tackles for Southern University during the 2022 season, including nine solo and nine assisted. He appeared in nine games and had a season high of five tackles against Arkansas- Pine Bluff in October.
