LAPLACE — This past week, the St. Charles Catholic Comets took on three winning teams and found three different ways to win. Coach Zach Weber was extremely pleased with how the boys handled themselves on the court.

On Monday night, the Comets took on Patrick Taylor (15-12) and came away with a 44-27 victory on the road.

“We started very sluggish and were able to make a late push right before halftime to go up seven after a few defensive stops and made shots,” Weber said. “After halftime, we came out and handled the second half fairly well to pull away and put the game away.”

Leading scorers were Davon Stirgus with 13 points and four assists, Kenneth Hall with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Samare Scott with nine points and eight rebounds.

Tuesday was Teacher Appreciation Night at the Comets gymnasium as St. Charles Catholic took on Episcopal B.R. (16-10), who at the time was ranked eighth in the division.

The Comets came out with a 39-34 win, making the night all the more exciting as the following teachers were honored at the game: Melanie Lohphink, Ty Monica, Jason Brown, John Talley, Jesus Gutierrez, Nicole Madere, Greer Millet, Francis Gatlin , Kassie DeArmas, Charlene Eymard, Emily Meyer, Elizabeth Romaguera, Loretta Hart and Peggy Bordelon.

“It was an exciting night for our school and basketball program Tuesday night,” Weber said. “It was an opportunity for our players to show our faculty and staff how much they impact their lives on a daily basis as well as an opportunity for our basketball program to compete against a program who has won 20+ games each year in the last 20 years and walk away with a win.”

Stirgus and Hall once again led the team. Stirgus had 14 points and five steals, while Hall contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds. Brady Burns also had a big night with nine points and four assists.

On Friday night, the Comets hit the road two hours away and competed against Westminster (11-8) in Opelousas, coming out on top with a 61-43 win.

“We might have played one our best halves of the season in the first half,” Weber said. “We shared the ball well and hit some early shots. Going in we knew that Westminster had big presence in the paint and we had to limit their second chances and I thought we did a very good job holding them to just two offensive rebounds in the first half which allowed us to extend our early lead.”

Stirgus had a huge game with 26 points and four steals. Hall scored 16 points and had an impressive 15 rebounds, while Burns had seven points and six rebounds.

This week, St. Charles Catholic is moving forward into the district tournament. After press time on Tuesday, the Comets took on International High in the first round after previously defeating the team in January. Another win was set to propel the Comets to a game against Newman in the semifinal round of the district tournament.

If the Comets advance past Newman, the District championship is scheduled for Friday Night. Starting Wednesday, all district games will be hosted at Country Day.

The extremely competitive District 10-2A includes Newman, Country Day, MLK Charter, St. Charles Catholic and International High.

Playoffs are set to begin next week, with pairings to be announced on February 20.
