Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Zachary man on Jan. 13 for alleged hunting violations in Iberville Parish.

Agents cited Brett M. Staley, 37, for discharging a firearm from a public road, hunting deer during illegal hours, hunting deer from a moving vehicle, taking illegal deer during an open season, hunting deer from a public road and failing to comply with deer tagging regulations.

Agents received a tip that someone shot at a deer from a white Ford pickup truck on Syrgenta Road near St. Gabriel on the evening of Dec. 28, 2022.  Agents responded to the scene immediately but could not locate the truck.

Agents received another tip about the whereabouts of the white Ford pickup truck on Hwy. 30 near St. Gabriel on Jan. 13, 2023.  Agents located the truck and were able to identify the owner as Staley.

Agents made contact with Staley on Jan. 13 and he admitted to harvesting a doe on the evening of Dec. 28, 2022 off of Syrgenta Road.  During further questioning, he also admitted to agents that he harvested antlerless deer on the nights of Dec. 25 and 26.  Staley did not tag any of the deer and all three of the antlerless deer were taken during days that were bucks only for that area.

Agents seized deer meat, a spotlight and a rifle.

Hunting deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine.  Taking illegal deer during an open season carries a $500 to $750 fine and 15 to 30 days in jail.  Hunting from a moving vehicle carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.  Hunting deer from a public road and failing to comply with deer tagging regulations brings up to a $350 fine for each offense.  Discharging a firearm from a public road brings up to a $50 and 30 days in jail.

Staley may also face civil restitution totaling $4,874 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.

Agents participating in this case are Sgt. Randy Lanoux and Corporal Chelsea Kling.
