On December 31, 2022, at 11:15 AM, Kenner Police responded to a report of a twenty-month-old child not breathing. Upon arriving officers were unable to revive the child and the child was pronounced deceased.
Detectives arrived on scene and initiated an investigation. Presumptive testing of nasal mucus obtained from the child on scene indicated the presence of Fentanyl.
A search warrant was executed at residence and small amounts of narcotics and drug paraphernalia were found in the bedroom where the child slept. Testing of drug residue found in the bedroom tested positive for Fentanyl.
Toxicology results from the autopsy were received on Thursday, January 12, 2023. Based on the significant levels of Fentanyl in the child’s system detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the mother of the child, Alexis Callero, 34, Kenner.
On January 12, 2023, Callero was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance (Heroin).
Chief Conley commends the patrol division and Detectives that investigated this case. β€œThe death investigation of a child is a difficult case to handle. As we work with DA Paul Connick’s office for a successful prosecution, information released may be limited as not to compromise the case. Public response through social media was greatly appreciated and useful, please continue to provide any information you, the public, may have.”
