Troopers Investigate Two Fatal Crashes in 24 Hours

St. Bernard Parish – On December 19, 2022, shortly after 2:15 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a vehicle crash involving a bicyclist on LA 46 near Gallo Drive in Chalmette. This crash ultimately claimed the life of 55-year-old Michael Charles Scott of Meraux.

The initial investigation revealed Scott was riding a bicycle east on the right shoulder of LA 46 near Gallo Drive. At the same time, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was also traveling east on LA 46, behind Scott. For reasons still under investigation, Scott turned left entering the path of the Chevrolet as he was struck.

Scott, who was not wearing a safety helmet, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Impairment on the part of Scott is unknown and toxicology samples will be obtained for testing. Impairment is not suspected on the part of the driver of the Chevrolet, however a voluntary blood sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The investigation is ongoing.

 

 

Plaquemines Parish – On December 19, 2022, shortly before midnight, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA 23 near Lake Hermitage Drive in Port Sulphur. This crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Richard Hurst of Marrero.

 

The initial investigation revealed Hurst was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban south on LA 23 near Lake Hermitage Drive when the vehicle traveled off the roadway, beyond the right shoulder, and impacted a utility pole.

 

Hurst was properly restrained, suffered life threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment on the part of Hurst is not suspected, however routine testing will be completed. This crash remains under investigation.
