Walk to End Alzheimer’s is World’s Largest Event Dedicated

to Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Northshore residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, 95 Judge Tanner Blvd., Covington, LA.

We are pleased to share that Tricia Wood Thomas, caregiver, author, and owner of Tricia’s Bridal and Pageant Boutique, will be the guest host for this Northshore Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  She walks in honor and memory of her father, Hubert Wood.

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease.

While plans are moving forward to host the Walk in person, the health and safety of participants, staff, and volunteers remain the top priorities. The Alzheimer’s Association will continue to closely monitor CDC, state, and local guidelines to ensure Walk events adhere to the latest recommendations. Options will be offered to participate online and in local neighborhoods.

The reason we walk
Every Walk hopes to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia as well as raise funds to sustain our numerous care and support programs, community education programs as well as research. Every Walk provides a chance for those participants to gather in the community to support one another in their caregiving journey.

One such caregiver, Tricia Wood Thomas, will be walking this year in honor of her father, Hubert Wood, who recently passed away from Alzheimer’s last December. Although the loss is recent and heartbreaking, Thomas continues to volunteer as an advocate, serving as an ambassador for the Louisiana Alzheimer’s Association where she is involved in the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) Advocacy Forum.  She also hosts a monthly Alzheimer’s Caregivers support group in her community.

In addition to her advocacy, Thomas is the owner of Tricia’s Pageant Productions and

she directs a pageant in her hometown to raise money for Alzheimer’s Awareness. Thomas placed fourth runner-up in the United States National Pageant in 2021. She competed again as Mrs. Louisiana United States 2022 and in the Mrs. United States Pageant in Memphis,

Tennessee this past October and placed second runner-up. She is a state champion speaker and continues to use her voice and platform to speak out and educate others about Alzheimer’s.

Her book, “Cooking with Love in Louisiana” was written in honor and memory of her father and can be purchased in her local boutique, Tricia’s Bridal and Pageant Boutique.

Alzheimer’s Statistics
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

In Louisiana alone, there are more than 92,000 people living with the disease and an estimated 203,000 family members and friends serving as caregivers.
