LAPLACE — LaPlace Frostop commissioned A1 Signs, LLC of New Orleans to rebuild its iconic neon, rotating mug. Winds from Hurricane Ida toppled the landmark structure from its pole, destroying it. After a year-long process, the landmark mug is ready to be reinstalled starting Monday, Oct.3, 2022.

The LaPlace Frostop mug illuminated the Airline for 63 years. It will be back in place as the restaurant celebrates its 64th year in business as the oldest operating restaurant in St. John the Baptist Parish. LaPlace Frostop will celebrate the mug’s return with the public on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022.

Installation will begin Monday, Oct. 3, 2022 (the restaurant will be closed to the public that day), and continue Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022.

The mug will sit atop a new support pole and concrete foundation made to meet Louisiana Civil Engineering wind requirements. The mug has 451 feet of neon, approximately 110 individual units. Installation will involve a coordinated process of heavy equipment, cranes, and care. Total project to replace mug, pole and foundation will cost more than $68,000.

“I can’t think of a better way to thank our community for 64 years of support than to rebuild this landmark,” says Terry Toler, LaPlace Frostop owner-manager.

Built by Morris Terry in 1958, The LaPlace Frostop has become a fixture on Airline Hwy (US 61) in LaPlace,

Louisiana. Mr. Terry leased out the restaurant until 1973 when his daughter Evelyn, and her husband Jimmie Toler, took over. Their daughter, Terry, joined her parents as owner-manager after graduating from LSU in 1993.

Even though The LaPlace Frostop has completed two renovations, the first in 1981 and again in 1996, it has retained its old-fashioned, drive-in atmosphere.

Today, The LaPlace Frostop continues to proudly serve the River Parishes area with a tried and true blend of tasty drive-in treats and local favorites.
