LSU QB Brennan decides to hang up his helmet

- Once he was told that LSU would be going with a more run-oriented quarterback, Myles Brennan decided to walk away from football.
The sixth-year senior, who twice earned the starting job but lost it due to freak injuries, thus ends a frustrating six-year career with the Tigers.
He reportedly was told by coaches over the weekend that he would not be the starter this season, a job he’d worked for and waited on for six years.
“Myles has always embodied the traits required to fulfill our mission to graduate champions, and we have full confidence those traits will help him succeed at every step of his journey moving forward.”
The LSU release indicated that Brennan, who graduated in May of 2021, is finished with football.
Daniels, a classic dual-threat quarterback, is the presumed starter now, although he and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier split time evenly with the first string in Monday’s practice. Nussmeier missed that first scrimmage with a minor injury.
Kelly made it a point to note that Mussmeier would have gotten extensive first-string snaps if he’d been healthy.
LSU’s only other scholarship quarterback is Walker Howard, a highly touted incoming freshman.
Brennan was the heir apparent early in his career before Joe Burrow transferred to LSU and led the Tigers to a 15-0 national championship while winning the Heisman Trophy in 2019, his second season.
Brennan won the starting job the following season and passed for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns before being injured in the third game against Missouri.
He suffered a rare abdominal injury that baffled doctors, who at first thought he would miss only a few weeks.
It eventually shelved him for the year, but he was primed to regain the starting job heading into the 2021 season. Just days before August practice began, however, he slipped on a boat dock during a fishing trip, breaking his left (non-throwing) forearm.
That, too, kept him out all of last season, and late in the year he entered the transfer portal.
But he eventually withdrew his name and returned to the Tigers after Max Johnson, who’d won the job in his absence, transferred to Texas A&M.
His return came at the urging of Kelly.
