WASHINGTON — Skylar Edwards, a rising senior at West St. John High School, was one of eight students across the state selected to represent Louisiana at the Youth Leadership Summit in Washington D.C. from July 17-20. Only 150 students from across the country were selected to attend this prestigious event.

According to the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, the Youth Leadership Summit provides a high-quality, national-level interactive training experience and peer-to-peer learning opportunity focused on life, leadership and learning-to-learn skills for freshman through seniors who are currently participating in GEAR UP programs.

Earlier this year, Edwards shared with L’OBSERVATEUR that she plans to pursue a clinical degree in psychology and re-invest in her community by opening a mental health clinic to service low-income families in the River Parishes. Impacting youth would be her primary focus.

Edwards is a member of West St. John’s Beta Club, Robotics Club, Student Government, Explorers Club, DECA and the Rams track team. She also volunteers virtually with the St. John the Baptist Parish Library System.
