As summer wanes, parents, teachers and students are planning for the upcoming school year.  While they gather supplies, new clothes/uniforms and wonder what their class schedule will be like, they shouldn’t forget their community libraries.

The public library can help with many aspects of transitioning back to school.  The library has many databases to help with homework research.  Databases such as A to Z USA, Career Cruising, Gale Biography in Context, Homework Louisiana, Literature Criticism Online, and World Book Web are a few resources located on our website.  Even for nervous first-time students, the dedicated library staff can assist anyone in finding stories to help.  Consider some of the following back-to-school titles: “Countdown to Kindergarten” by Alison McGhee, “Dinosaur Starts School” by Pamela Duncan Edwards, and “First Grade, Here I Come!” by Nancy Carlson just to name a few.

St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries will host a few Back-to-School related programs.  The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will have a Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt, Back-to School Survival Kit, and Paper Bag Backpack activity for children and teens.  All branches will host a Custom Confetti School Supply program for children, ages 6 to 11.  Grab and go bags will be available ALL MONTH LONG for these activities.

An Adult Craft Night will be held at all three library branches.  Patrons are invited to make a pair of matching initial coasters. This event will be held on Wednesday, August 10 at the Reserve Library, Wednesday, August 17 at the Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) and Wednesday, August 24 at the Roland Borne, Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard).

Adults looking to improve their computer skills can visit our library branches for some practice.  Get help setting up emails, operating Microsoft Office products and much more.  Join the staff at the Garyville Library on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m., the Reserve Library on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and the Edgard Library on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m.  For more information, please call your local branch.

 

The library system will continue to host Outdoor Story Time at local parks in the parish every Wednesday at 1 p.m.  Here is the list below:

• August 3 at REGALA Park in Reserve
• August 10 at Cambridge Park in LaPlace
• August 17 at Belle Pointe Park in LaPlace
• August 24 at Juan Anthony Joseph Memorial Park in Edgard
• August 31 at REGALA Park in Reserve

 

Story Time will also be held for children, ages 0 and up, every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Reserve Library and every Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Garyville Library.  This weekly program is a time for young children and their parents or caretakers to interact in a comfortable setting.  Each session will include stories, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities.
