Baton Rouge – On June 22, shortly after 9 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two-vehicle crash on US 61 north of Thomas Road in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 45-year-old Lamontache Williams of Zachary.

The initial investigation revealed that Williams was driving a 2017 GMC Terrain on US 61 northbound north of Thomas Road.   At the same time, a 2006 Mack dump truck was being driven north on US 61, ahead of the GMC.  For reasons still being investigated, Williams struck the rear end of the dump truck.  The impact caused the Terrain to travel eastward on US 61 prior to coming to rest.

Williams, who was not restrained at the time of the crash, succumbed to his fatal injuries at the scene.  The driver of the dump truck was properly restrained and did not sustain any injuries.  A toxicology sample was obtained from Williams and will be submitted for analysis.  This crash remains under investigation.

Speeding, impairment, and lack of seatbelt use continue to be the leading causes of fatal crashes. Troopers encourage the public to have a plan in place to avoid driving impaired. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation.  Taking the simple precaution of wearing your seatbelt, drastically reduces the chances of you or your passenger being serious injured or killed in a crash.
