DESTREHAN — The German Coast Farmers Market will be holding a 19th-anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 18 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event will be held at the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library, the new location for the East Bank market that is held every Saturday.

“The East Bank Saturday market has been at Ormond Plantation for 18-plus years, but a few weeks after Ida we had to move because we could no longer set up in the parking lot,” said Ann Montgomery, market board president.

Since Ida, the German Coast Farmers Market and St. Charles Parish East Regional Library have been working hand-in-hand, bringing more patrons into both the market and the library.

“It’s so awesome. We feel like it was fate that brought us there because we had no intentions of ever leaving Ormond,” Montgomery said.

Alongside the group of vendors that will be present, the celebration on June 18 will also consist of several special guests.

“The chef from Ormond Plantation, Richard Kiral, is going to do a cooking demonstration, which is really popular. He’s awesome. He cooks it there and gives all the samples away,” Montgomery said.

ASAP Band, an acoustic duo featuring Bobby Stephens and Lloyd Alombro, will be performing live at the celebration, as well as JoJo the Clown and Balloon Twister.

The German Coast Farmers Market will also be giving away promotional items during the event.

The market accepts both EBT/SNAP benefits and credit cards, as well as a program called Market Match.

“Shoppers with SNAP benefits are given a dollar in Market Match tokens for every dollar they spend at the market using their EBT card,” Montgomery said. “That’s up to 20$ per visit to the market. If they spend $20, they get a free $20. That money is provided by United Way.”

The German Coast Farmers Market takes place at the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and every Wednesday at the Westbank Bridge Park from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
