Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Are you ready to dive into “Oceans of Possibilities” during this year’s Summer Reading Program?  The annual Summer Reading Program will be held at St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries from Wednesday, June 1 through Friday, July 15.  Have you spotted SJBPL tote bags or tumblers around town and wondered how you can get one too?  Kids who read 16 books will receive a jigsaw puzzle and a tote bag for their successful reading skills.  Teens who read eight books will get a bendable book light and water bottle.  Adult reading counts too!  After reading four books, a journal and tumbler will be given for participation.  Readers of all ages that complete the reading goal will be entered into a drawing to win a grand prize.  Parents, please bring your children to the libraries to sign them up to be a part of the Summer Reading Program and sign yourself up as well.  If you can’t make it to the library, please register online at www.stjohnlib.com.  A plethora of events and crafts will be held throughout the month.

The kick-off event will feature the Kabuki Dancers performing their “Breakin’ It Down” routine.  The group will discuss the many different types of dance styles derived and influenced by Hip-Hop culture.  This includes: Breakin’, Popping, Locking, Waving, and others.  They will also talk about the pioneers and dance crews that popularized and brought those styles into mainstream culture.  They will be performing at the Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) at 12:30 p.m. and the Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7.

Dubi, your favorite book loving monster, will be hosting “Splish, Splash, Fun!”  The puppet show will include your favorite ocean themed books, songs, and crafts to coincide with this year’s summer reading theme.  Join us at the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) on Thursday, June 16 at 2 p.m., the Garyville Library on Thursday, June 23 at 2 p.m., and the Edgard Library on Thursday, June 30 at 2 p.m.

The Edgard Library will have a visit from St. John Parish Fire Department on Tuesday, June 14 at 11 a.m.  The fire department will also visit the Reserve Library on Tuesday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m.  Safety skills will be demonstrated by firefighters and children will be able to tour the fire truck.

A “Candy Guessing Jar Game” will be held for the entire month of June at the Reserve Library.  The winner will receive the candy jar, as well as another small prize.  Families are also invited to play an ocean themed “Tic Tac Toe” game at the Reserve Library.  Prizes will be given to winners daily.  For more information, call 985-536-4107.
