LSU Student Media Journalists Bring Home Top Awards from National, Regional Media Competitions

BATON ROUGE – Students from LSU Student Media outlets took home 19 awards for journalism excellence in the 2021 Region 12 Society of Professional Journalists, or SPJ, Competition and six awards in the 2022 College Media Business & Advertising Managers, or CMBAM, Competition.

Among the awards were five winning pieces from Tiger TV, including Best All Around Television Newscast; four winning pieces from the Reveille newspaper in Breaking News Reporting, Sports Writing, General Column Writing and Sports Column Writing, as well as a finalist award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper – Large Schools; and one winning piece from the Manship News Service in In-Depth Reporting.

LSU Student Media proudly recognizes the following Tiger TV, KLSU, Reveille and Manship News Service student journalists who earned 2021 SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards:

    • Finalist: Sierra Vanderhorst from Atlanta, Ga., KLSU, “Gabriel Watkins congressional intern”

“Our student journalists at LSU Student Media continue to produce award-winning content in their service to the campus community,” said Director of LSU Student Media John Friscia. “This speaks to the consistency and quality of work that is done here in Hodges Hall. SPJ’s Region 12 represents Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee schools. First-place winners will compete at the national level later this spring. CMBAM is a national nonprofit organization that supports collegiate advertising and business operations. LSU is one of CMBAM’s 125+ member-schools.

LSU Student Media provides media experiences to students through The Reveille newspaper, lsureveille.com, and The Reveille mobile app; Tiger TV; KLSU-FM radio; and the Gumbo yearbook.
