Original:
Lafayette Parish – Shortly before 3:00 A.M., on May 18, 2022, Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on US Highway 90 near Andres Road (west of Scott) in Lafayette Parish. The crash claimed the life of an unidentified white female.
The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed the female was bent over in the roadway facing east. At the same time, a 2015 Ram 1500 pickup was traveling east on US 90. The Ram pickup struck the female near the center line of the roadway.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment on her part is unknown, but a standard toxicology sample was taken for analysis.
The driver of the Ram was not suspected as being impaired at the time of the crash but voluntarily submitted a blood sample for analysis. The driver, who’s restraint use is unknown, suffered only minor injuries. This crash remains under investigation.
A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, not walking too close to roadways, and walking against the flow of traffic could prevent most pedestrian related crashes.
Troop I has investigated 13 fatal crashes resulting in 15 deaths in 2022.
