Lake Charles – On May 6, 2022, shortly after 8:30 p.m., Troopers began investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Enterprise Blvd. and Broad Street in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 27-year-old John Blake Baldwin of Sulphur.
The preliminary investigation revealed Troopers observed a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling south on LA 27 near US Hwy 90 at a high rate of speed. Troopers determined the speed of the motorcycle at 77 mph in a posted 55 mph speed zone. Troopers attempted to stop the motorcycle, at which time the operator of the motorcycle, later identified as Baldwin, increased his speed in excess of 100 mph. Baldwin committed
numerous traffic violations as he continued traveling on I-10, state highways, and city streets. While traveling through the intersection of Enterprise Blvd. and Broad Street, Baldwin’s motorcycle struck a raised concrete curb and he was ejected from the motorcycle.
Baldwin, who was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Excessive speed is a factor in the crash; impairment is unknown. This crash remains under investigation.
On May 16, 2022, Troop D was notified that Baldwin had succumbed to his injuries.
