LAPLACE — Sophomore Brady St. Pierre struck out nine during the Division III baseball semifinals Thursday evening in LaPlace, leading the Comets to a 4-1 win against Notre Dame and a spot in the championship game.

Second-seeded St. Charles Catholic will compete against No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas for the state title at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pat Kenelly Diamond Alumni Field in Hammond.

The Comets scored all of their runs in the first two innings during Thursday’s semifinals. Ayden Authement had two hits and three runs batted in. Ian Arnett also had two hits, and he was the first to round the bases after capitalizing on an attempted throw-out at third.

St. Pierre went the distance at the mound, allowing only two hits across seven innings in what Coach Wayne Stein referred to as one of the best pitching performances he has seen from the Comets in 20 years.

Notre Dame’s pitching staff also put up a fight, with Tyler Corzine striking out four.

St. Charles Catholic won the Division III title in 2019. A year ago, the Comets lost the championship game to Notre Dame.

St. Thomas Aquinas most recently appeared in the Division III title game in 2018. On Thursday, the Falcons defeated No. 5 Episcopal 9-0 to advance to the finals. The shutout win included two three-run homers.
