LAPLACE — Recently the Kiwanis Club of Tri Parishes, serving St. John, St. James and St. Charles, was granted its charter. It is part of a larger group that covers Louisiana, Mississippi and part of Tennessee.

The Kiwanis Club is a service group with a focus on children and education. According to the Tri Parishes Club, “Some kids are hungry. Some kids need help learning to read. Others need mentors in their community.”

The charter was presented to current chapter President Dayna James by Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Kelly-White, President Rick Latiolais and Trustee Marcel Lashover.

The local group formed earlier this year. Along with President James, the board consists of:

  • Sandi Lambert – President-Elect
  • Melynie Wright – Vice President
  • Trina Brown – Treasurer
  • Marchelle Washington – Secretary
  • Lynett Hookfin – Membership Chair
  • Semi Wadhwa – Board member
  • Robert Tamplain – Board member
  • Ronnie Fiest – Board member
  • Monique McGee-Duronslet – Board member
  • Katie Long – Board member

Kiwanis also offers programs such as Terrific Kids and Bringing Up Grades, using positive reinforcement and prizes to reward students for learning. Other programs address social needs. One example is the Backpacks for Kids program, which loads up bags with snacks and drinks to get children through the weekend and breaks when they do not have access to school lunches.

The next membership drive is Tuesday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m at The Ferry Landing Cafe, located at 2113 Miles St in Lutcher. The event also honor all First Responders from St James Parish.

The Kiwanis Club of Tri Parishes meets the second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month at 6 p.m. The cost to join is $120 per year. For more information call Dayna James at 504-319-2483.
