LULING — Sheriff Greg Champagne is honored to announce that St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Fallen Deputy, Louis Harry Estay, will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in May of 2023.

Recently, Sheriff Greg Champagne was contacted by family members of Louis Harry Estay informing him that Mr. Estay was killed in the line of duty in 1953 and asked for his assistance in recognizing him. The family was able to provide documents that informed us of the circumstances of his death.

Deputy Estay’s end of watch was Sunday, November 29, 1953. Deputy Estay was 72 years old when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he and another deputy were standing on the edge of Highway 90 approximately one mile east of Boutte, Louisiana.

The two deputies had been patrolling the area in separate vehicles and had stopped to talk on the edge of the roadway. They were both struck by a speeding vehicle driven by a drunk driver. The driver was arrested and charged with negligent homicide.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial honors fallen peace officers by permanently recording and commemorating their service and sacrifice. https://nleomf.org/
