Have you ever heard someone say they weren’t going to bring their children to church? That when their kids grew up, they could make their own decisions about God?
I haven’t heard it often, but whenever I do I think of a young man I know. His Christian parents brought him to church and provided faith-based education.
His military career led him overseas. While riding in a tank on foreign soil, unsure of what lay ahead, what did he say he thought of? The songs he learned in children’s church. Because he had been given a foundation based on the living word of God, the truth that had been planted in his heart filled his mind and brought him peace.
I wonder what he would have thought of if his parents had kept their faith from him. What would have shaped his foundation? The Bible is clear. “And all the children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children,” Isaiah 54:13.
Most would likely agree they want their children to have the best nutrition, provision and even the nicest vacations. Why would they not instill the truth of God’s word, the foundation upon which our universe stands?
I believe it’s tragic to raise a child in spiritual poverty.
