LAPLACE — East St. John Preparatory Academy in LaPlace was selected to receive a $15,000 award from Kellogg’s Mission Tiger.

The award will help East St. John Prep restart its soccer program that has been defunct for several years. Funds will also benefit existing athletic programs by replacing uniforms lost during Hurricane Ida.

In addition to receiving the $15,000 award, the East St. John Prep Bobcats were invited to participate in a celebrity scrimmage. Five girls and five boys from East St. John Prep’s basketball teams comprised an all-star team coached by the legendary Shaquille O’Neal on Sunday, April 3 at Xavier University in New Orleans.

The Bobcats pulled together and came away with a victory against the celebrities despite being starstruck. Participating students were Sarai Gaines, Koi Grant, Christion Batiste, Derion Rachal, E’naira Carter, Ro’mayhne Thompson, Ramone’ Lathers, Chance Bovie, Ma’shad James and Jorell Martin.

The opposing team was coached by New Orleans’ very own Drew Brees. After the scrimmage ended, students watched as the celebrities battled it out on the court.

Students enjoyed fun and games during the Mission Tiger event.

Since 2019, Tony the Tiger and Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes have used Mission Tiger to save middle school sports programs across the country. Since its inception, Mission Tiger has reached more than 660,000 children by repaving courts, refurbishing athletic facilities, funding training equipment and more.
