April is an exciting time to attend St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries as we celebrate National Library Week from April 3-9. National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.  It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. The American Library Association theme for this year is “Connect With Your Library.”  This theme promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers and other resources.

“If You Love Your Library, Leave a Heart” will be hosted for the entire week at the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve).  Children, ages 5 and over are welcome to decorate a paper heart to be placed on a paper quilt. Patrons of all ages are also invited to “Decorate Bookends” for the entire week. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) invites patrons of all ages to leave opinions and suggestions on sticky notes and place them on a bulletin board. The opinions and suggestions will then be used for improvements/changes at their branch.  Children, ages 2 and up, can pick-up grab and go bags to make their very own “Librarian Playset.” The playset can be used to practice the important skills of organizing, sharing, borrowing and returning library items. The Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will host “Bookface.” Patrons who visit the library throughout the week, are welcome to strategically line up their faces or another body part alongside a book cover that features a matching body part so that there appears to be a melding of life and art.

The St. John Parish Library System is proud to celebrate “National Poetry Month.”  National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996.  Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the United States banded together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Help us celebrate National Poetry Month by creating “Blackout Poetry” at the Garyville and Reserve libraries. Blackout poetry is when you take a written piece of text from a book, newspaper or magazine and redact words, in order to come up with your very own poetry. Kits will be available for pick-up at the Reserve Library all month long.  Completed poems that are turned in will be displayed at the library for all to enjoy. The Garyville Library will have a “Poetry Creation Station” where patrons can find all the supplies needed to make their own blackout or collage poem.

Easter will be celebrated on Sunday, April 17.  St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries will have programming to commemorate the holiday. The Reserve Library will host an “Easter Egg Hunt” on Saturday, April 9 for 11 a.m.  Children, up to 12 years of age, are welcome to attend.  Baskets, crafts, an egg hunt and a live Dubi puppet show will be featured. The Garyville Library will have grab and go bags available to make a “Book Bunny Garland,” an “Easter Bunny Wreath” and an “Easter Egg Canvas.”  The kits will be available for pick-up all month long.  The Reserve Library will have supplies available to make an “Easter Egg Wreath” and a “Bunny Craft” April 10-14.  An “Easter Basket and Egg Craft” will be hosted at the Edgard Library.  Kits will also be available for pick-up from April 10-14. This month’s Make Shoppe will feature Floral Easter Eggs. Adult patrons can pick up take and make bags from April 13-20.
