Agents arrested Brett Wiley, 29, for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting an officer, and cited him for failing to comply with deer tagging requirements and not possessing basic and big game hunting licenses.

Agents were on patrol when they encountered Wiley in illegal possession of a shotgun by a convicted felon near Mansura.  Before agents could apprehend him, Wiley fled the scene and resisted an officer.

Agents then obtained arrest and search warrants for Wiley and his property.  On Jan. 26, agents executed the warrants with the support of agents from their drone program for aerial surveillance and their Maritime Special Response Team to safely apprehend Wiley.  Agents booked Wiley into the Avoyelles Parish Jail.

Agents found a freshly harvested deer on Wiley’s property that he admitted to harvesting earlier in the hunting season.  Wiley did not possess basic and big game hunting licenses and failed to tag the deer.

Agents seized a shotgun in connection with the case.

Illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon carries a $1,000 to $5,000 fine and 10 to 20 years of jail.  Resisting an officer brings up to a $500 fine and six months in jail.  Failing to comply with deer tagging requirements carries up to a $350 fine.  Failing to possess basic and big game hunting licenses brings up to a $50 fine.

Wiley may also face civil restitution totaling $1,624 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.
