Black History will be celebrated throughout the month of February at St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries. Trina Smith, our children’s/outreach librarian, encourages children of all ages to check out or download books featuring African American artists, athletes, inventors and musicians all month long. Each week, a make and take craft bag will be available for pick-up at the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) exemplifying those figures. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) will honor the achievements of African American women weekly on our social media platforms with a virtual program titled “Black History Month: Learning with Literature.” The Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (Central) will be hosting a “Black History Month Vase” program for adults. Craft supplies can be picked up from the Reserve Library from Thursday, February 10 through Thursday, February 17. The Roland Borne, Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will host a virtual program on our social media platforms titled “40 Years of Excellence.” Educators of the West Bank community (Edgard) will be featured for their contributions made throughout the last 40 years. The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will also host a virtual program titled “Because of Them, We Can.” African Americans will be recognized for the roles they played in U.S. history. Join us on our social media platforms to learn about activists, authors, illustrators and much more.

The month of February also brings the Mardi Gras spirit to the libraries. Mardi Gras will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 1. The Garyville Library invites children, ages 3 and up, to make “Mardi Gras Masks” in the comfort of their homes. Grab and go bags will be available for pick up all month long. Tweens and teens can join us on social media for an instructional video on how to make a “Mardi Gras Mocktail.” The Garyville Library will also host a “Mardi Gras Painting Craft” and “Mardi Gras Upcycling” for adults. Supplies can be picked up for both crafts from Friday, February 18 through Friday, February 25. The Reserve Library will host “Mardi Gras Crowns” for the entire month of February. Children, ages 5 and up, are invited to pick up craft bags all month long, while supplies last. “Let’s Celebrate Mardi Gras” will be hosted by the Central Library. Children, ages 5 and up, can pick up supplies from Sunday, February 20 through Sunday, February 27 to make Mardi Gras tambourines. All supplies will be available for pick up at the Reserve Library.

Valentine’s Day will also be celebrated at the libraries. The Central Library will host a “Valentine’s Day Pop-Up Card” craft for children ages 3 and up. Grab and go bags will be available for pick-up from Tuesday, February 1 through Monday, February 14. Take and make kits will be available for pick-up from Tuesday, February 8 through Monday, February 14 with supplies to make “Paper Circuit Valentine’s Cards” and “Cozy Sock Cupcakes.” Tweens and teens are welcome to participate in both programs. ALL SUPPLIES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PICK UP AT THE RESERVE LIBRARY.
