NORCO — What started as a routine wellness visit on January 27 turned into news no parent ever wants to hear.

Nine-month-old Blakely Estevez, daughter of Blake and Abigail Estevez of Norco, was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor, a rare type of childhood cancer that impacts the kidneys.

Bloodwork and a CT scan at Children’s Hospital revealed the tumor has almost completely taken over Blakely’s left kidney. She also has a small lesion on her right kidney.

Blakely will undergo six weeks of chemotherapy starting next week to shrink the mass on her left kidney and hopefully eliminate the lesion on her right kidney. She will need surgery to remove her left kidney in the near future.

The Estevez family is continuing to face hardships from the destruction of their home during Hurricane Ida. Blake Estevez serves nearby communities as a firefighter, and Abigail Estevez works with children as an occupational therapy assistant.

A fundraiser has been set up at www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-estevez-family

Pediatric Therapy Solutions is raising money for the Estevez family with a $500 Visa gift card raffle. Donations can be submitted through Venmo @Danielle-Mixon, and every $20 donated will equal one chance to win. The winner will be announced on February 15.
