LAPLACE — The student council for Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Elementary School celebrated the Martin Luther King Holiday with a MLK “Day On” of Service.

Students organized hurricane relief items, including replacement uniforms. Mr. Douglas Triche, principal, and Ms. Addie Melancon, assistant principal, organized the event.

Student participants included Drew Arceneaux, Kolin Tregre, Mia Dyson, Khloe Tregre, Daniyah Winding and Felicity Louper.

“We hope that all our students can learn that they can make a difference and make our community better,” said Triche.

Learning service is an important part of AOL School. Mia Dyson, fourth grader, said Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to “take care of our community.”

“He had a dream for all of us to follow,” she said.

Kolin Tregre said today is a good day for service “because Dr. King helped to stop racism, and we should follow his example and his hard work.”

AOL School suffered damage during Hurricane Ida but was still able to open and find time to help others in the community. The school served as the site of many distribution days for relief supplies and meals since the storm. Many families and residents of LaPlace have been able to get much needed help after suffering the loss of property from Hurricane Ida.
