LAPLACE — In one of the most exciting and anticipated games the season, the undefeated St. Charles Catholic Comets took down the Newman Greenies 12-7 in a game which was televised due to the popularity of the Newman quarterback, Arch Manning.

Manning, stated as being the No. 1 ranked quarterback in the 2023 class by 247Sports, and the Greenies defeated the Comets last year by a score of 14-7. The Comets had held the Greenies off until the fourth, when the Greenies scored towards the end of the game.

Thursday’s game was no disappointment as the stadium was filled with anticipation of what would happen this time. The Comets started off strong, as usual, and made it to the scoreboard first with a pair of field goals from Carter Chauvin. The first was 24 yards and the second was 21 yards, which made the score 6-0 by the end of the quarter.

The Comets managed to make several stops and kept the Greenies from scoring, despite many efforts by the Greenies. The Comet defensive line has been a tremendous force this year and tonight was no exception. Just as in the year before, the Comets’ defensive line held strong and fast, and the first half ended with the Comets on top 6-0 over the Greenies.

The second half saw the Greenies scoreless, just as in last year’s game. However, Manning managed to throw one 18-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hunter to make the score 7-6 with 5:30 left in the third quarter, and this score rode out until the end of the quarter. The Comets fought hard as well as the Greenies in what was a defensive battle to the end.

The Comets scored again on a 23-yard touchdown run from Ayden Authement with 47 seconds left till the end of the game. The Comets tried for a two-point conversion, but the play was no good, which left the score at 12-7 with the Comets poised to win. And win is exactly what the Comets did, as the final score was SCC Comets 12, Newman Greenies 7.

The Comets improved their record to 5-0 for this year. Their next opponent is Cohen on October 22.
