NEW ORLEANSInternational High School of New Orleans (IHSNO) is launching a much-needed donation drive to collect school supplies for students and teachers in the River Parishes most heavily impacted by devastating Hurricane Ida. Schools in St. John, St. Charles, St. James, Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes are planning to reopen next month, and school officials in the affected parishes say there is a critical need for high-demand school supplies before students and teachers return to their classrooms.

IHSNO students, faculty and staff are collecting a large array of much-needed classroom and school items ranging from pens to calculators to notebooks to construction paper. A full list of need items is below.

IHSNO leaders have also offered high school students from the storm’s hardest hit communities to enroll and join IHSNO for classes in downtown New Orleans until their high schools are fully reopened. IHSNO leaders say they do not want Hurricane Ida-affected students to miss any classroom instruction time.

“IHSNO currently has space and extra desks for students who don’t want to miss out on more school time, and we will work to figure out a way to transport the River Parish students back and forth from their communities to IHSNO each day,” said IHSNO Head of School Sean Wilson.

School supply donations can be dropped off in IHSNO’s lobby at 727 Carondelet Street. IHSNO is calling on neighboring downtown businesses to join the drive by donating items for the school students still suffering losses in the wake of one of the most powerful Category 4 hurricanes to ever hit Louisiana.

Parents of students in the hurricane disaster zone who want to temporarily relocate their children to IHSNO until their damaged schools are fully reopen should apply on OneApp at  https://enrollnola.org/k12/international-high-school/ or call IHSNO at 504-613-6703 to take advantage of the available, but limited, openings at New Orleans’ only downtown high school.
