LAPLACE — As communities along the Gulf Coast begin recovery efforts from the widespread devastation of Hurricane Ida, Winn-Dixie is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank, along with the Terron Armstead Foundation, the Malcolm Jenkins Foundation and other local professional football players Alvin Kamara, Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, Jameis Winston and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to help provide relief.
In support of St. John the Baptist Parish, the organizations will host a mobile pantry event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the St. John Community Center, located at 2900 U.S. 51 in LaPlace. The distribution, which will provide hurricane relief essentials, is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.
The mobile pantry will offer 1,000 families everyday staple food items such as canned goods, fresh produce, water and ice, as well as other high-demand recovery essentials including bleach, sanitizing wipes and diapers.
St. John the Baptist Parish was one of the most devastated areas of southeast Louisiana and local communities are still struggling to recover. The mobile pantry will provide much needed recovery relief and supplemental support to families in the River Parishes and neighboring communities.
Additionally, Winn-Dixie’s parent company, Southeastern Grocers, will present checks to the American Red Cross for $170,000, which was raised during the grocer’s Hurricane Ida community donation program, and to Second Harvest Food Bank for $25,000 in honor of Hunger Action Month.
Founded in 1925, Winn-Dixie grocery stores, liquor stores and in-store pharmacies serve communities throughout five southeastern states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is a subsidiary of Southeastern Grocers, which is one of the largest supermarket chains based in the Southeast.
