September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. The American Library Association’s annual campaign to encourage patrons to enroll for a library card began nearly 30 years ago. Signing up for a library card at the St. John the Baptist Parish Library System is an easy process. Patrons who meet the criteria, such as being a resident of the parish, own parish property, work in the parish or enrolled in school within the parish may apply for a card.

A library is a temple of learning, and a library card is the key that unlocks a treasure chest full of knowledge and information.  Library card users have a multitude of privileges that they can take full advantage of with their cards, such as access to books, electronic resources, educational databases, online tutoring, video courses, test preparation and so much more.  Patrons can stop by any of our four locations to receive a newly designed card.

All branches of the library system will be participating in Library Card Sign-Up Month.  There will be an interactive puppet show, featuring our new library friend Dubi. Grab and go craft bags and snacks will be given to participants.  Here are the dates and times of the performance:

• Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (Central) – Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
• Roland Borne, Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) – Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
• Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) – Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.
• Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) – Monday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m.

Banned Books Week is celebrated from September 2 to October 2.  It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries.  It is the national book community’s annual celebration of the Freedom to Read.  Hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events.

To celebrate Banned Books Week, the Central Library will have a Banned Books Week Interactive Display.  The display will feature the statement, “The WORST thing about censoring what someone can read is______.”  Patrons will be able to write their responses with chalk markers.  Patrons will also see the covers of books that have been banned or challenged and the availability of any books that we have in our collection that can be checked out.  For more information about this program, please call 985-652-6857.
