LAPLACE — The St. John Legends Track Club recently competed at the Club Championships held in Satellite Beach, Florida. Several local athletes placed in the top eight, earning medals and All-American status. The St. John Legends also secured an additional five qualifiers for the AAU Junior Olympics being held in Humble, Texas, from July 31 through August 7.
Coach Mark Creecy said the Club Championships saw participation from more than 400 track clubs across the continental United States, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. The St. John Legends have competed at the national level every year since the club’s inception in 2013, with the exception of last year due to COVID-19 shutdowns.
The St. John Track Club can be found most evenings practicing its running, jumping and throwing at the Thomas F. Daley Memorial Park on Highway 51 in LaPlace. Creecy said he is pleased with the effort he has seen this year, especially in the throwing and jumping events.
Several members of the St. John Legends Track Club had already qualified for the Junior Olympics prior to the Club Championships in Florida. New qualifiers included young long jumpers Cori and Camryn Cammon, ages 6 and 5.
The St. John Legends also added new qualifiers Diamond Shorty, Lauren Lewis and Zykia Dorsey in the 4×100-meter relay in the 15/16 age division. The relay team also included Zhanell Francois, who previously qualified in the long jump and the triple jump during a meet in Hammond. Francois is now qualified to compete in the 4×100-meter relay at the Junior Olympics along with her teammates.
Several other team members who qualified for the Junior Olympics last month during the District 11 Qualifiers put forth great performances at the Club Championships. Some added additional events for the Junior Olympics.
Aja Creecy medaled with an eighth-place finish in the shot put and a sixth-place finish in the discus, while Kharma Creecy medaled with an eighth-place finish in the shot put.
Other St. John residents who made the trip to Florida and had a good meet were Chani and Ciera Cannon, Za’nya White, Anya Creecy, Dedrick Singleton, King David Singleton, Day’vonne Singleton, Kohen Lockett, Devion Devare and Timothy Andrews.
