St. James Parish Government observes Juneteenth state holiday

Convent – The St. James Parish Council unanimously passed a resolution during the June 9 regular council meeting to proclaim Saturday, June 19, 2021 as Juneteenth Day in St. James Parish.
On June 19, 1865 enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom with the Emancipation Proclamation. This year marks the 156th anniversary of this day and has been made a legal holiday in the State of Louisiana by Governor John Bel Edwards.
“It is important that we come together as a community to recognize the significance of this day as a monumental moment in our Nation’s history”, noted President Dufresne.
In accordance with state offices, St. James Parish Government close government offices on Friday, June 18 in observance of Juneteenth Day.
Due to the threat of Invest 92L impacting the area over the weekend, essential personnel will remain on call and prepared to respond if needed. Normal business hours will resume Monday, June 21, 2021.
