DES ALLEMANDS – Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit donated a 110-acre tract of land on Bayou Des Allemands to St. Charles Parish, which will be home to a new world-class public boat launch and recreational area. During a ceremony and celebration on the grounds, with Parish President Matthew Jewell and other officials present, Chevron formally made the donation.

“Chevron has been operating in Louisiana since 1911 and continues to believe in contributing to the local community,” said Leah Brown, public affairs manager for Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit. “We’re excited that families from across Louisiana will soon be able to use this area for recreation and to reconnect with nature. We’re proud to be a part of this special initiative.”

The donation is the successful culmination of years of effort by the Parish to provide residents with better options to launch their boats and interact with the environment. The sprawling 110-acre area is located in Des Allemands, south of US Highway 90. The boat launch and recreational space will be created using a $1.88 million grant from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA). The partnership was heralded as the optimal model for CPRA’s recreational “Quality of Life” projects.

“We expect this to be one of the premier coastal parks, boat launches, and ecotourism attractions in Southeast Louisiana,” said Parish President Jewell. “We’re tremendously grateful to Chevron and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority for helping us create these amenities which will be used by St. Charles Parish residents for generations to come.”

Access to the boat launch will be provided by a road leading from WPA Road (LA Highway 632) near Allemands Elementary and Des Allemands Playground, the land for which was also donated by Chevron in 2006. Construction of the boat launch and the recreational space is expected to begin in the near future.
