LAPLACE — The St. Charles Catholic girls hosted Louise McGehee in the regional round of the Division III playoffs and emerged with a 51-27 victory. The fourth-seeded Lady Comets will take on fifth seed Isidore Newman at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Comets gym.

St. Charles Catholic was the first to reach the goal during the regional round on Feb. 18. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Comets already had a strong 17-8 lead. By halftime, their lead had increased to 29-11. Major SCC contributors were Kaitlyn Abair with 24 points and Mya Brown with 16 points.

The SCC girls are 11-5 for the season, while Isidore Newman has a 15-7 record for the season. Newman recently collected a 52-41 victory over Catholic New Iberia in the regional round to move to the quarterfinals.

A win over Newman would bring the Lady Comets to the semifinals to face the winner of Lafayette Christian and Notre Dame.

Fifth seeded Riverside Academy also moved to the quarterfinals after overpowering No. 12 Central Private 56-18 Feb. 19 in Reserve.

The Lady Rebels exploded on the court, establishing a 17-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. That lead was 34-6 by halftime as Central Private struggled to keep up. Eighth grader Imani Daniel led the team with 27 points.

Riverside Academy will travel to take on No. 4 St. Martin’s Episcopal at 6 p.m. Thursday. St. Martin’s Episcopal is 11-6 for the season, while Riverside Academy has a 13-6 record. St. Martin’s recently topped Crescent City 49-33 in the regional round.

If successful in the quarterfinals, Riverside Academy will face the winner of Ouachita Christian and St. Edmund.

The LHSAA Girls’ Marsh Madness will be played March 1-6 at the University Center in Hammond.
