LAPLACE — The following is important information for the Saturday, March 20, 2021 election.

The deadline to register to vote in person or by mail is February 17, while the deadline to register to vote through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is Feb. 27. The deadline to request an absentee by mail ballot is 4:30 p.m. March 16. Absentee ballots can be requested online through the Louisiana Secretary of State Voter Portal or in writing through the St. John Parish Registrar of Voters Office (1811 W. Airline Highway in LaPlace on the East Bank and inside the Edgard Courthouse at 2393 Highway 18 on the West Bank). The deadline for the Registrar of Voters to receive a voted mail ballot is by 4:30 p.m. March 19, in advance of the March 20 election.

Early voting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6-13, excluding Sunday, March 7.

In Louisiana’s Second Congressional District, which covers St. John the Baptist Parish, Congressman Cedric Richmond will resign to work at the White House. Voters will need to select a candidate to take Congressman Richmond’s place.

The candidates include the following: Chelsea Ardoin, Belden “Noonie Man” Batiste, Claston Bernard, Troy A. Carter, Karen Carter Peterson, Gary Chambers Jr., Harold John, J. Christopher Johnson, Brandon Jolicoeur, Lloyd M. Kelly, “Greg” Lirette, Mindy McConnell, Desiree Ontiveros, Jenette M. Porter and Sheldon C. Vincent Sr.

If none of the candidates attain more than 50 percent of the vote, there will be a run-off on April 24, 2021 for the Congressional elections.

The deadline to register to vote in the April 24 election in person or by mail will be March 24. The deadline to register to vote through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is April 3.

Those requesting an absentee by mail ballot must do so by 4:30 p.m. April 20, and the deadline for the Registrar of Voters to receive a voted mail ballot is 4:30 p.m. April 23.

Early voting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 10-17, excluding Sunday, April 11.
