COMETS: Students foster love for community

 

LAPLACE — Although COVID-19 has halted some of the traditions of a “normal” school year at St. Charles Catholic High School, the Comets have tried to ensure that service is still open for action!

This year, St. Charles Catholic High School collected over two truckloads of items for their annual Thanksgiving drive. Each religion class donated multiple laundry baskets filled with nonperishable food items and cooking ingredients meant to help those in need celebrate Thanksgiving. Once the items were collected and sorted at SCC, they were then delivered to Ascension of Our Lord Church and School where they were distributed to those in need throughout St. John the Baptist Parish. SCC and AOL have enjoyed this partnership for many years and see it as a sign of solidarity to serve the community at large.

While sorting through the items in their religion class, eighth grader Dane Galiano said, “It just hit me that these things are going to actual people’s homes.” Reflecting on this, Campus Minister and eighth grade religion teacher Raleigh Poche stated, “It’s little moments like that that make these service projects truly service learning moments. It’s important for them to love their community and always want to be of service to it.”

The Fellowship Christian Athletes at St. Charles Catholic High School recently made gift-filled shoeboxes as part of “Operation Christmas Child.” The members filled over 25 shoeboxes with brand new items such as small books, bibles, rosaries, socks and school supplies. The St. Charles Fellowship of Christian Athletes completed the packing at one of its recent Thursday night meetings as a way to give thanks. FCA leader in training Michael Hotard stated that this annual tradition at SCC “is a wonderful chance for us to share God’s love and joy with boys and girls around the world.”

SCC truly lives out their Catholic values by participating in these charitable activities during the holiday season every year. The Comet Family this year is most thankful for all those who contributed to the charitable efforts of the school year and wishes everyone a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.
