LAPLACE —Senior cornerback Kamren Campbell is known by his peers for his work ethic and down to earth disposition. His size makes him a force to be reckoned with on the football field, and the St. Charles Catholic Comets are counting on his leadership skills to kick off a successful 2020 season.

Campbell exited his junior season with 17 passes, eight pass break-ups and four interceptions, along with first team all district accolades.

The 2019 championship game against the Lafayette Christian Knights was the most memorable game of his high school career thus far, despite the fact that the Comets came up short and ultimately ended the season with a 41-14 loss.

This year, Campbell has one goal in mind: get back to the state championship and find redemption. He has every intention of ending his high school career with a championship ring in hand.

Although there will be fewer fans cheering in the stands under Friday night lights this year, all roads still lead to the state championship in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. This year, the Comets will join a 32-team playoff bracket of select and non-select teams.

Campbell said no one outworks St. Charles Catholic.

“We’re looking forward to making it a great game and a great year no matter what the circumstances are. We always come in hard and put our best foot forward,” Campbell said.

“We have a lot of potential to make it back to the championship.”

Coach Frank Monica said Campbell brings a level of leadership to the Comets.

“He’s a guy who we can always count on because he’s always available. He’s a big, strong cornerback, and he’s one of the biggest corners that we’ve ever had. When it comes to size, he can do a lot of things. We have not used him a lot as a returner in the past, but I think this year we are going to use him as a returner also on kick-off returns,” Monica said.

Monica added that Campbell is a very physical player who has the skills to lead the defense into the 2020 season. He also stands out with a good-natured personality and a heart that beats for the game.

“I think the most important thing about Kamren is that he loves the game and he plays it for all the right reasons. He’s very easy to coach. He listens and he pays attention to details,” Monica said. “Coach Wayne thinks he has a future as a college prospect. Defensive coaches like him a lot, and we’re really counting on him to lead us through the season.”

Campbell has been playing football since he was 5 years old. Athletics present an opportunity for him to let out some energy and share his true self.

Campbell plans to land a college scholarship and carry his football career into the next chapter of his life. He hasn’t made any commitments yet, and his future prospects remain wide open.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught him to think fast and play smart, just like his NFL role model William Jackson.

“It really impacted me because I couldn’t really practice with my team. It also helped me because I learned a lot about myself and how to get better by working out at home,” Campbell said.

Campbell also participates in basketball and track and field at St. Charles Catholic. He was named the Co-District Defensive MVP for basketball.

Campbell finds inspiration from his family and especially from his great grandmother Louise Narcisse, who always instilled within him the importance of getting an education.

After high school, Campbell plans to study psychology. It’s always been a passion of his to support people who need a listening ear.
