Volleyball is back in action

LAPLACE — The first volleyball matches of the 2020 season can begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to a memo from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
The LHSAA previously stated that the volleyball season would not begin until Louisiana moved to a Phase Three re-opening. That changed after Governor John Bel Edwards extended the current Phase Two guidelines through Sept. 11.
While the season will move forward, strict safety guidelines are to remain in place. No more than 25 students and 10 adults will be allowed in the gym during matches.
In another departure from the regular season, the LHSAA is canceling all jamborees, tournaments and tri-matches. All matches will be played in a best three-out-of-five format.
All facilities must be sanitized prior to use, and facemasks, temperature checks and social distancing will be required in the gym during Phase Two. Athletes on the court may choose not to wear facemasks while playing. There will be no minimum game requirement this season.
A memo sent to LHSAA member schools on Monday stated, “This is a very fluid situation that is constantly changing. We are hopeful with these measures in place we will have a successful volleyball season.”
The end of the regular volleyball season is currently scheduled for Oct. 31, 2020, with playoffs expected to continue through November.
