EDGARD — Judge Sterling Snowdy announced recently that he is seeking his fifth six-year term in the Nov. 3 election. A judge since 1997, Snowdy serves St. John the Baptist Parish as judge of Division C.

“I have worked faithfully, serving you with honesty and integrity for 24 years. As judge, I will continue to carefully consider both sides of every issue and always do what’s right,” Snowdy said.

Snowdy pointed to his 34 years of legal experience and the extraordinary knowledge he has gained from serving as judge.

“I know the law and I will not hesitate to use its full power to protect the rights of all who come before me in court. I treat everyone that comes before me with dignity and respect,” he said.

Snowdy has always managed an efficient courtroom and docket. He pre-clears every hearing date and trial date with litigants to avoid needless delay and expense. He conducts a large number of status conferences every year by phone, again saving litigants time and expense. Snowdy is usually available on the phone, or by Zoom conference, within 20 minutes to handle any issue important to attorneys and litigants.

Over his 24 years as judge, Snowdy has presided over all types of proceedings: everything from capital murder cases to misdemeanors; class actions to custody matters, successions and expropriation cases.

COVID-19 led to many changes in the courthouse. Snowdy spearheaded the effort to maintain access to justice during the early days of the pandemic. He created the “Tuesday Zoom docket” that handled by Zoom conferences matters from all three sections of the 40^th JDC. To date, Snowdy has not missed a single day of work since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place. Snowdy also led the way in the use of new technology in the courtroom, specifying the most up-to-date technology that the court has begun to use in handling all types of courtroom procedures in the new socially-distant environment.

A native of Reserve, resident of LaPlace for 30-plus years and a lifelong citizen of St. John the Baptist Parish, Snowdy possesses a keen insight into local matters. “I understand the people of St. John Parish, our heritage and our concerns. I will continue to use this awareness to impartially serve the people of our parish to the best of my ability.”

Snowdy holds membership in numerous professional organizations including the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Fifth Circuit Judges’ Association – past president, the Fourth and Fifth Circuit Judges’ Association, the 40^th Judicial District Youth Planning Board, the Louisiana District Judges’ Association, the Louisiana Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the 40^th JDC Bar Association, the Louisiana Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

In addition to his duties as judge, Snowdy is deeply involved in efforts to better our community through his work with numerous civic and charitable organizations.

He is involved with the Keep St. John Beautiful Committee, the Belle Terre Civic Association – Vice President and Night Out Against Crime co-ordinator, St. John Clean Sweep, St. John Theatre – President, Leaders Against Litter, and SJA Knights of Columbus. He has also been the chairman of the Reserve Sesquicentennial Committee, a founding member of the River Region Arts and Humanities Council, a member of the Reserve-Godchaux House Historical Society and has helped behind the scenes with many civic groups. Snowdy and his family are parishioners at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in LaPlace, where he serves as the musician/leader of the Contemporary Choir and a Eucharistic Minister.

Snowdy earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of New Orleans and a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola School of Law in New Orleans.

He is married to Hope Hymel Snowdy and they are the parents of two adult children.
