HAHNVILLE — St. Charles Parish Registrar of Voters Brian J. Champagne announced important dates for the Aug. 25 Parish-wide Proposition Special Election.
Last Wednesday, July 15, was the last day to register to vote in person or by mail. Saturday, July 25, will be the last day to register to vote online at geauxvote.com. Tuesday, Aug. 11 will be the last day to request absentee by mail ballots.
Early voting begins this Saturday, July 25, and continues from July 27 to Aug. 1 and from Aug. 3 to August 8. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early voting will not be held on Sundays.
Friday, Aug. 14 is the last day the Registrar can receive a completed absentee ballot. Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the Saturday Aug. 15 Election Day.
The ballot includes the following: 911 Millage Renewal, Road Lighting Millage Renewal and the Library Millage Continuation.
The 911 Millage Renewal asks if the residents of St. Charles will continue to levy a 1 mill tax on all property subject to taxation in the parish (an estimated $1.5 million to be collected on the levy of the tax for an entire year) from 2021 to 2030. The purpose is to improve, maintain and/or operate the 911 emergency telephone system. This includes the payment of necessary dispatch personnel.
The Road Lighting Millage Renewal asks residents if they will continue to levy a 1.01 mills tax on all property subject to taxation in the parish (an estimated $1.5 million to be collected on the levy of the tax for an entire year) from 2021 to 2030 for the purpose of providing and maintaining electric lights on streets, roads, highways, alleys and public places.
The Library Millage Continuation asks if the residents of St. Charles will continue to levy a 4.53 mills tax on all property subject to taxation in the parish (an estimated $7.5 million to be collected on the levy of the tax for an entire year) from 2021 to 2030. The purpose is to maintain, operate, construct, improve and support the public libraries in St. Charles Parish. If approved, this will present a .03 mills increase over the 4.50 mills tax authorized to be levied from 2010 to 2020. The increase is the result of a re-appraisal.
Registrar of Voters offices are located on the West Bank and East Bank of St. Charles Parish. The West Bank location is at the Courthouse, 15045 River Road in Hahnville, and the East Bank location is located at Arterbury Building, 14564 River Road in New Sarpy.
