BATON ROUGE — At the request of the Louisiana Secretary of State, Governor John Bel Edwards postponed Louisiana’s elections for another few weeks because of the COVID-19 outbreak in the state. The Governor originally moved the elections on March 13.

The June 20, 2020 Presidential Preference Primary election in Louisiana is rescheduled for July 11 from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. The July 25 election is rescheduled for Aug. 15 from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin proposed an emergency election plan that would allow mail-in ballots as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus. This would extend to individuals who don’t normally qualify for absentee ballots to vote by mail, including but not limited to people ages 60 and older, those with underlying health conditions and those impacted by stay-at-home orders.

Louisiana Republican lawmakers voted 5-1 on Wednesday to reject the emergency election plan, citing concerns that the move was “too extreme” and could bring fraud into the voting system. State leaders are working to reach a compromise.
