RESERVE — Seniors and graduating juniors at East St. John High School and West St. John High School will be required to complete senior projects to satisfy the graduation requirement of earning Carnegie units for courses in which they were enrolled during the second half of the spring semester.

The due date for these projects is May 1. Oral presentations must be complete by May 8. All projects must be approved by the student’s teacher by April 21.

“We believe these projects are the most flexible way for our students to satisfy the requirements needed for graduation, allowing them to work independently at home and at their own pace,” Interim Assistant Superintendent Dr. Juanita Hill said. “We want to stress to students to not wait until the last week of April to begin these projects. These projects are not optional and must be completed as a graduation requirement.”

The projects are categorized by content area and transcript group: English language arts, math, social studies, science and electives. Students will only be required to complete one project per content area regardless of the number of courses in which they are enrolled in that content area.

Students also have the option to design performance tasks that interest them. However, these tasks must be approved by their teacher of record and although the project may assume a variety of formats, the final product must meet the goals of the senior project as a culminating learning experience.

Students enrolled in dual enrollment courses who are continuing to complete online coursework with the college or university through the month of May will not be required to complete a senior project for that course. The grade earned with the post-secondary site will be the grades earned for the course(s).

Packets containing information about the projects have been mailed to students’ homes. This information is also available on the district’s website at   https://www.stjohn.k12.la.us/apps/pages/seniors.

Available low and no-cost internet options are also listed on this site.

The grade earned on the completed project will be recorded as the seventh marking period grade and the grade earned on the oral presentation will be recorded as the eighth marking period grade.
