LAPLACE — Local nonprofit group Men of Our Community is boiling seafood and bringing awareness to voter registration from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Belle Pointe Park, next to East St. John High School.
Organizer Cory Hutchinson said the group hosted similar events in fall 2019 during the height of election season. While the polls have closed, for now, Hutchinson said it is always time to reinforce the civic responsibility of voting for positive change in the community.
“Every vote counts, and they have a lot of people who are registered to vote and don’t vote,” Hutchinson said. “You have people who are able to register who are not registered voters. If you want to change things in your community, the way to do it is voting.”
St. John Registrar of Voters Russel Jack will be onsite to educate the public on where, when and how to vote.
Boiled seafood will be free to all new registered voters. For more information, email StJohnMOOC@gmail.com.
Men of Our Community was founded two years ago when a group of men rented out a movie theater for children to enjoy a showing of Black Panther. The success of the event prompted the start of a nonprofit intended to provide positive role models and mentoring for local youth.
Men of Our Community hopes to organize a family day at Chili’s in the near future.
